Timeless Style

with Mathilde Lacombe

When we met with French beauty entrepreneur Mathilde Lacombe in Paris she told us about how she simplified her beauty routine as well as her wardrobe. The Carolyn in black made the cut for the seasonless, beautifully made pieces she kept. Here the AIME founder is sharing three ways she is wearing the timeless piece.

Tell us why you consider the Carolyn in black a timeless piece of clothing?

The Carolyn in black is perfect because it’s so versatile and I love that you can dress it up or down. It’s timeless and I’m always looking for pieces that I will wear again and again without getting tired of them! The quality and the cut really make it a staple in my wardrobe.

Comfort is key, but I also like to stay chic.

Explain the three looks you have styled with the Carolyn in black?

Look 1
The Carolyn in black paired with a striped Celine sweater and high boots is my go-to choice for a business meeting. I like that it’s sophisticated but still very me and relaxed. The proportion of the sweater show the waist and the boots give the illusion of longer legs. It also looks like it’s a skirt when it’s actually a dress: 2 pieces in 1, so practical! Navy blue and black is one of my favorite color combinations, it will never go out of style.

Look 2
For a cocktail party or date with my husband I wear it with the Stuart Weitzman heels. I don’t like to feel too dressed up so I am adding the leather jacket to make the look a bit more rock. I love the simplicity of the Carolyn, so I want to stick to clean and simple lines (the nude heels are almost invisible and the fake diamond riviera adds a nice touch).

Look 3
For an everyday look I wear the Carolyn in black with Converse. I’m always running everywhere and having a train to catch everyday means I have to be prepared to run ;-) So I don’t wear heels on a daily basis. Comfort is key, but I also like to stay chic. I put a t-shirt underneath so it’s not too sexy.

What are other wardrobe staples of yours and your go to brands for such?

It’s a perfect mix of good basics and forever pieces. I shop a lot on Vestiaire Collective to find beautiful pieces. I think second-hand is wonderful, you can make amazing deals. Jeans, leather jacket, black/white/neutral t-shirts, a trench coat, white sneakers, my man’s shirts...this is my daily wardrobe. The brands I like and shop are CelineCamilla and MarcAcne Studios... but also ConverseVejaZaraUniqlo (they make the best affordable cashmere sweaters) of course. For bags I have my Chanel bags that are such classic pieces as well as a big Saint Laurent leather tote in black that’s perfect when you are a mum and need to carry your life with you!

As a mum of three and a business woman – what’s the outfit that works for everything: the school run, the team meeting and the event after work?

For me it’s jeans, with a white t-shirt and a nice blazer or leather jacket. I can dress it up or down with heels or Converse. And for the evening I would just add a little smoky eye, earrings and voilà!

When I buy something new, I have to sell or give something.

With AIME you have launched your second beauty business, a brand focusing on a holistic approach to skincare. Tell us how you came up with the idea?

I’ve struggled with bad skin for many years (I have rosacea). Working in the beauty industry, improving my skin kind of became an obsession, because I had access to all the brands and experts in the world but still, my skin was not good. It’s only when I started taking interest in nutrition (cutting out all inflammatory foods like dairy, gluten...) and taking daily probiotics, learning the link between the gut and the skin, that my skin started to change. I knew, I had to create a brand to really help women understand their skin. AIME means love in French and my best reward is when I have clients telling me, that our products changed their life and skin and that they now feel good about themselves.

The beauty and fashion industries are similar in a way that there is a constant urge for newness. How do you find the balance of developing new products that excite your costumers whilst staying true to your values?

I won’t launch something just for the trend. I want all my products to be staples in women’s bathrooms. That’s why we only offer one face cream, one face cleanser...
I think marketing can create a lot of “fake problems” for us women. With AIME I want to simplify the beauty routine. I know it’s still consumption and products but we are trying as much as possible to be conscious.

And when it comes to dressing yourself - how do you keep your look up to date without constantly buying new clothes?

I think that if you invest in timeless, classic pieces it’s really easy to update your look. When I look at the styles I like the most they never feel dated. When you stick to a style it’s almost like you will not age. And if there really is a trend I love I will indulge at Zara or Mango, but I will never invest in a trendy piece from a designer.

The Carolyn in black is our ultimate essential. Our aim was to create the perfect slip dress that works hard for the woman wearing it, taking her from day to night – a staple she can rely on. What is the equivalent AIME product? What is the one product you would recommend to every woman?

Our core line includes Pure GlowFrench Glow and Urban Glow. For me French Glow is my staple product, I can’t live without it! I wanted clean formulas with amazing results and I think we’ve achieved that as they keep selling out ;-)

When I look at the styles I like the most they never feel dated.

Instead of beauty from the outside, AIME convinces with a beauty from the inside philosophy, an investment in a longer lasting solution. Are you also applying this approach to your wardrobe decisions?

The last few years I’ve really changed the way I consume both fashion and beauty. I’ve drastically simplified my beauty routine (I used to have a whole room dedicated to my beauty products and now it all fits in a bathroom cupboard, so I am really proud of that haha). And for fashion it’s the same. Instead of buying a lot of cheap pieces, I try to invest in more timeless and beautiful pieces. When I buy something new, I have to sell or give something. I don’t have a huge dressing room so it makes me “anxious” when I have too many things and it doesn’t look clean and organized. And again, Vestiaire Collective is my heaven, I love second-hand shopping.

Who are your style icons?

I love Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s style. It’s the perfect example of timeless style. When you look at most of her looks from the 90s, she could still be wearing the same today. I also really like the Olsen sisters.

What are your favorite Instagram accounts to follow for inspiration right now?

I love Tash Sefton - she gives great advice on wardrobe basics.

Your first memory of fashion?

When I bought my first pair of Louboutin heels 15 years ago. I was an intern at ELLE Magazine and with my first paycheck I bought patent leather heels. I don’t wear them anymore because they have round toes and I prefer pointy toes but I will never get rid of them, they have sentimental value.

What are the most treasured pieces in your wardrobe?

My engagement ring and my Chanel bags (I hope to give them to my daughter one day).

Cliché French girl - what is typically French about your style?

Never too dressed up, I think when it comes to fashion and beauty, we never want to look like we put too much effort into something ;-)
